What Is Otoplasty?
Otoplasty, also called ear pinning or cosmetic ear surgery, is a plastic surgery procedure that changes the outer ear’s position, shape, or size. The most common version, ear pinning, corrects ears that protrude too far from the head, usually because the ear has an underdeveloped fold or an oversized bowl of cartilage.
Otoplasty is typically performed through an incision hidden in the natural crease behind the ear. Through this incision, surgeons can reshape, fold, or secure the cartilage with permanent internal sutures so the ears sit closer to the head. When needed, otoplasty can also reduce oversized ears or correct asymmetry between the two sides.
Dr. Pazmiño uses a wide range of otoplasty techniques, chosen for your anatomy and your goals, including suture-based pinning, cartilage reshaping, and ear reduction, alone or in combination. Ears often differ from side to side, so each ear may need its own technique. Before surgery, he reviews your anatomy and the plan with you so you know exactly what to expect.
Dr. Pazmiño performs otoplasty for children as young as 8, working closely with their parents throughout, as well as for teens and adults.
