Breast Augmentation Choices: Which Incision Is Right For You?

Patients today may choose to place their breast augmentation or breast implants incision in many different locations. The choice a patient makes depends on their body type, lifestyle, and personal preference. Which one is right for you?

Periareolar

This incision is very popular with patients because it is difficult to detect at the border of the darker skin around the nipple and the lighter skin of the breast. This is also an excellent option for patients whose breasts may be uneven or may require a lift.

Inframammary

This incision is popular with patients who want to avoid an incision around the nipple. Patients whose nipples are too small to accommodate an incision may also select this location. These patients do not need any surgery to adjust the shape and position of their breasts. As this incision avoids most of the tissue of the breast, there may be a lower risk of nipple sensitivity.

Transaxillary

This incision in the underarm (axilla or armpit) is popular with patients who want to avoid an incision on the breast altogether. These patients do not need any additional surgery to adjust the shape or position of their breasts. This approach works best with saline implants or small silicone gel implants.

Vertical

This incision, also known as the “lollipop” incision, begins around the nipple and continues down the center of the breast. This is excellent for patients who would like an implant but also need significant lifting of the breast at the same time. Through a single incision, a patient can combine two surgeries in one (breast lift AND a breast augmentation)!

Implant Placement

During the surgery, Dr. Pazmiño can place the implants either under just the breast (subglandular position) or under the breast and chest wall muscle (subpectoral position). Implants placed beneath the chest wall muscle (subpectoral) offer a few advantages over those placed only beneath the breast tissue (subglandular). These advantages include a reduced risk of capsular contracture (post-operative tightening around the implant) and less interference with mammogram examinations. A possible disadvantage includes soreness in the first few days after surgery. Dr. Pazmiño will answer all of your questions so that you can decide which position is right for you.

Saline And Silicone Gel Breast Implants

Breast implants are silicone shells filled with either saline (salt water) or silicone gel. Both implant types are safe and each offers its own advantages. The decision to use saline or silicone gel breast implants is based on your aesthetic goals, your body shape, and your personal preferences.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved silicone breast implants for breast augmentation surgery. Dr. Pazmiño is proud to offer patients the option of silicone gel-filled breast implants since they are much softer and feel more natural than saline-filled breast implants.

Breast Augmentation Implant Profile

Women choosing breast augmentation can select from a number of different implant profiles or heights. How Does A Breast Augmentation Work?

A breast augmentation or breast implant at Miami Aesthetic takes approximately forty-five to ninety minutes and is performed as an outpatient procedure. In the operating room, Dr. Pazmiño will bring to life the choices each woman has made. He will first create the incision you selected and place the implant in the position you chose. He will then use stitches that do not have to be removed and cover these incisions with tape and bandages. In a few days, these bandages may be replaced with a surgical bra.

Complementary Procedures

Breast augmentation can achieve dramatic and beautiful results on its own as well as in conjunction with other cosmetic surgery. Women may combine a breast augmentation with other procedures such as a breast lift or liposuction for more satisfying results.

Recovery After A Breast Augmentation

Patients who receive a breast augmentation in the morning are back at home by lunch time and can return to work in one to three days. Each patient will receive an appropriate post-op bra or garment to help the implants heal in the correct position. Swelling from the surgery will subside in two to four weeks while implants may take four to eight weeks to achieve their final position. Incision lines will continue to fade for months or years.

Risks Of Breast Augmentation

At Miami Aesthetic, our first priority is your safety. Every patient is carefully examined and appropriate screen tests are performed before your surgery. Operative precautions are taken before, during, and after your surgery. The recovery of each patient is carefully followed by Dr. Pazmiño and his staff. This helps our patients recover comfortably and consistently get the results they want. Although rare, post-operative complications from surgery are possible. They may include infection, capsular contracture (post-operative tightening around the implant), a change in nipple sensation, and poor healing, which may require further surgery. A rupture, or leakage, of the implant as a result of injury or the normal compression and movement of your breast is uncommon. If a saline implant ruptures, the implant will simply deflate as your body safely absorbs the salt water. If a silicone implant leaks, you will need to see Dr. Pazmiño. Regular monitoring of breast implants is recommended to ensure continuing breast and implant health.
